Hi, I’m Marissa Hermanson Moomaw, and I’m new(ish) to Richmond, Va. After moving from Naples, Fla., to Boston to Boulder, Colo., to the Blue Ridge Mountains, I am dropping my anchor in the James River.

Since moving to Richmond a few years ago, I have felt the pull to go out and explore — and, that’s where this blog comes in handy. Through RVAnewbie I combine my innate wanderlust + learned journalism skills (some writing and amateur photography) to provide content on the Richmond area. Using the concept of hyper-local journalism, I capture what I see and do in RVA — everything from the city’s food scene to neighborhoods I’m digging. While this is a “hyper-local” travel blog, I occasionally post about places outside of Richmond that are within driving distance. Everyone loves a good day-trip or weekend getaway. cheers, marissa

Who am I?

I’m a journalist born and raised in Naples, Fla. I write food, travel, and lifestyle stories for a variety of publications. My stories have been published in Cosmopolitan, Delicious Living, Denver Post, Forbes Travel Guide, Hello Giggles, Paste, Plate Magazine, Ski, Southern Living, The Knot, among other newspapers and magazines. To learn more about my professional journalism background, visit marissahermanson.com.

But who am I really?

I’m a human-interest writer who loves animals, arts and crafts, cooking, food and wine, hiking, people-watching, skiing, traveling, and all things Scandinavian.

Why the heck did I create this blog?

RVAnewbie combines my love for travel with journalism. As someone who is constantly curious, this is a good way for me to satiate my wanderlust (in an affordable and controlled manner), while bettering my writing skills and filling my time with another hobby.

What kind of camera do I use?

A Canon Rebel T3i digital SLR camera with 18-55 mm IS II lens. And, my iPhone camera.

Thank you, Lauren! I started RVAnewbie when I moved to the area 2 1/2 years ago as a way to explore my new city. Richmond is filled with so many stories. It warms my heart to see that you are capturing stories of Richmonders on your blog. So lovely! Welcome to Richmond. As you’ll find out it’s the perfect balance between city-life and a small-town feel. cheers, marissa

    Hi Marissa,
I have thorougly enjoyed reading your blog! I am a new blogger myself who ironically wanted to major in journalism in middle school but ended up in IT instead. Anyhow, I live in the Tampa Bay, FL area and am thinking of relocating to Richmond next summer. You have given me such a good feeling about Richmond! Thank you!

Hi Tashia, Thank you! I used to live in Naples, Fla., so you aren’t too far from where I grew up. I think you’ll really enjoy Richmond. We have been here almost four years now, and I love it. There is so much to do — from the fabulous restaurants and art galleries to the outdoor activities along the James River. Also, my favorite thing about Richmond is the people. I have met some of the nicest, most wonderful and creative people. I’m very happy that we have decided to put down roots and can call Richmond home.
